SUMMARY:RTCC SMART Series 2019: Financing Smart Cities
DESCRIPTION:Cities face building pressure to become 'smart' in the face of increasing urbanization\, expectations of sustainability and public services\, and concerns about climate resilience. In response\, many are deploying innovative new technologies that rely on sensors\, AI\, IoT\, and beyond to improve transportation\, public safety\, energy infrastructure\, environmental management\, and more.\n\n \n\nBut cities face a major hurdle in the transition to 'smart' cities: funding large-scale upgrades to infrastructure is frequently cost-prohibitive\, and there are limited options for traditional financing models. Successful communities are navigating this challenge creatively - but how? What alternative resources are available to innovative cities? What new models and partnerships are being developed to overcome these financial barriers in North Carolina and beyond?\n\n \n\nHear from industry experts and municipal leaders on the finance mechanisms affecting smart city growth. Our panel will discuss the challenges facing communities\, how cities are navigating funding hurdles\, and what trends they foresee.\n\n \n\nEach panelist will provide a brief presentation highlighting their area of expertise\, followed by a panel discussion of the topic and an audience Q&A.\n\n\n\nPanel speakers are listed below.\n \n\n\n \n \n \n Moderated by Lee Worsley\, Executive Director of the Triangle J Council of Governements. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Will Aycock\, General Manager of Greenlight Community Broadband for the City of Wilson\, oversees North Carolina's only all-fiber optic network.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n As CIO for the City of Greensboro\, Jane Nickles serves in the executive capacity as the director of Information Technology and Enterprise Solutions functions. Jane assumes management responsibility for all IT departmental programs\, services\, personnel\, and activities\, as well as providing leadership in the development and implementation of information technology initiatives and strategies. Jane is responsible for planning\, developing\, organizing and directing a comprehensive information technology program\, including areas of personal computers\, mobile devices\, computer hardware and software\, telecommunications\, enterprise storage and servers\, and an extensive fiber optic network connecting city facilities and traffic signals throughout Greensboro.\n\n \n\n Jane has led the effort to gain national recognition for Greensboro as a top 10 Digital City by the Center for Digital Government and acceptance into Bloomberg Philanthropies' What Works Cities program.
